The Ancient Ritual of the Moroccan Hammam

Step into a world of steam, tradition, and profound purification. The Moroccan Hammam is more than a spa treatment; it's a centuries-old ritual for the body and soul.

The Moroccan Hammam, or public bathhouse, has been a cornerstone of Moroccan culture for centuries. It is a place not only for physical cleansing but also for social gathering and spiritual renewal. At Marrakech Oasis, we bring this authentic, time-honored tradition to you in a luxurious and private setting.

The Ritual

The journey begins in a heated, steam-filled room that helps to open your pores and relax your muscles. This prepares your skin for the deep cleansing to come.

  1. Savon Beldi (Black Soap): First, your body is coated in savon beldi, a gel-like soap made from black olives. This natural, vitamin E-rich soap softens the skin, making it ready for exfoliation.

  2. The Gommage (Exfoliation): After the soap has been left to work its magic, a kessala (spa therapist) uses a kessa glove, a coarse exfoliating mitt, to scrub away dead skin cells. This vigorous exfoliation, known as gommage, reveals brighter, smoother, and incredibly soft skin beneath.

  3. Ghassoul Clay Mask: Following the exfoliation, a full-body mask of ghassoul clay is applied. Mined from the Atlas Mountains, this mineral-rich clay draws out impurities, tightens pores, and nourishes the skin.

  4. Final Rinse and Relaxation: The ritual concludes with a refreshing rinse, often with cool or lukewarm water, to close the pores. You are then left to relax, often with a glass of sweet mint tea, feeling utterly renewed and serene.
